Born out of a rich tradition of research and quality, a history of technological perfection and attention to fine detail, Persol glasses are in a class of their own.
Made by hand with the highest quality materials- from the crystal lenses to the acetates and metals of the frames, the iconic arrow and the hidden technologies beneath the surface- Persols are more than just glasses, they are works of art.

Persol is committed to making the best possible product. Our commitment to excellence can be seen in the careful choice of materials and the complexity and precision of the manufacturing process and in Luxottica’s rigorous testing system which ensures the quality of every part of every pair of glasses we produce.

The entire manufacturing process still takes place in the historic Lauriano factory where many of the steps of production still involve handcrafting. This has allowed the company to marry technological solutions with a rich tradition of craftsmanship to create glasses of the highest quality. The average length of time needed to produce a Persol frame is almost double that of simple acetate frames because the process to make iconic Arrow and Meflecto system, both unique to Persol, cannot be automated and instead require manual workmanship.

In our plastic frames, natural materials such as acetate are used. Our acetate is derived from cotton flowers. This cotton is pulverized and treated to take the form of a perfectly malleable uniform mass. The end product maintains cotton’s natural properties – allergy free, warm to touch and pleasant on the skin for optimum comfort.

Using natural materials also allow us to create color variations that can only be found in Persol products. Persol boasts countless patents and trademarks that are exclusive to our product line.

Quality
In the early history of Persol, when the glasses were produced in small volumes, the company also offered more than four different sizes for each pair of glasses, bridges of various heights and widths and arms of various lengths – all in the name of making each pair of glasses essentially “made to measure” so they would be as comfortable as possible.

Particular care is still devoted evenly distribute the weight of the glasses across their entire surface through a special process called “telatura” that consists of eliminating edges on the underside of the bridge to make the fit more comfortable. This manual process was first introduced when Persol founder Giuseppi Ratti still ran the company and is still applied with the same precision and attention today.

Research into comfort also led Persol to create a foldable acetate frame in the 1960s, perhaps the first of its kind.

Comfort
Crystal lenses are a point of pride for Persol. Representing quality and excellence, most models use lenses made from the most precious optical material of natural origin guaranteeing protection and visual clarity. Persol’s crystal lenses are scientifically formulated to offer unsurpassed protection against the sun’s harmful rays, absorbing radiation that can be harmful to the eyes.

Persol’s polarized lenses block the light reflected on sand, roads and water, providing clear and relaxed vision in extreme environmental conditions.

Persol offers a 1.8 super-light polarized lens – a lens made from extra fine glass developed using new production techniques to shape and temper the glass. These lenses are more comfortable with a reduction in thickness from 2.2mm to 1.8mm and a decrease in the weight.

Persol’s polarized lenses are a technologically advanced optical product, built by inserting a very fine film of polarizing organic material between two top quality, totally optically neutral crystal lenses that block the rays of reflected light on sand, roads and water for the best possible vision.

The first Persol lens was made in the 1920s and was the first in a series of lenses designed to meet specific needs for wearers ranging from pilots to mountain climbers. The Persol Brown 75, the classic yellow–brown lens, the Persolmatic with its photo chromic effect.

Patented at the end of the 1930s, the Meflecto is the world’s first flexible stem system designed for maximum comfort by eliminating pressure on the head from the arms of glasses. The Meflecto system allows the glasses to adapt to the unique shape of any face and still today represents a technologically unsurpassed solution.

In terms of production, the Meflecto system involves inserting nylon or metal cylinders into an acetate stem, intersecting them with a flexible core of harmonic steel. The process requires over 10 working steps compared to that of a normal frame. Simply put, this system allows the stem to bend comfortably for the wearer.

Meflecto
Persol’s founder Giuseppe Ratti intuitively recognized the need to differentiate and make his products iconic and recognizable. At the end of the 1930s the swords of ancient warriors inspired the Arrow symbol.

The supreme Arrow is the symbol of Persol, the defining feature. When Ratti created the Arrow he said, “this will be my warhorse.” From the first simplified version (called Simplex), the Arrow has evolved through continual technical and design adjustments, arriving at the Supreme Arrow, which is currently used in Persol collections. The historical evolution of the Arrow includes over 30 different types. Only the latest, the Supreme Arrow, includes numerous versions (Supreme 85, Supreme 60 mini, Supreme 45, etc.)

Over the years, through all its evolutions, the Arrow has acquired considerable symbolic value and has been widely copied. The arrow is what makes a pair of Persol’s recognizable among the vast landscape of optics, and what makes the brand so iconic.
